I have no issue with a focus on romance, however, I do think there was room to let us in on Belly’s aspirations beyond Conrad whether that’s swimming or academics, it would have been good to know she had goals that don’t include a boy.Īlso while I get that it reflects the title to have every boy drawn to Belly’s newfound prettiness, I really would have liked some examples of other things about Belly that appeal to these boys aside from her looks, especially since Belly’s most prominent personality trait on display here is her tendency towards hissy fits which I think most of us can agree isn’t exactly attractive. Was I expecting more? Yes, absolutely.īoth times I’ve read this book I’ve questioned that anyone would tolerate the nickname Belly let alone introduce herself by it, I mean Belly isn’t shy about voicing her displeasure throughout the book yet she doesn’t protest her ridiculous nickname, that’s kind of tough to believe. I had high hopes considering the reverence I had placed in Jenny Han after reading TATBILB. There I said it, please don't hate me but things just started falling apart after that. I wish this was the one and only book in this trilogy. Nothing life changing, but enjoyable none the less. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't tackle any deep or serious issues, it is fairly surface level. The characters, setting, and overall arch of book 1 in this trilogy was fleshed out very well. It's rare that I become just as invested in secondary characters as I am with the main characters. I found myself drawn to everyone in this book, almost equally. I found this book reminding me of my youth a couple of times and I welcomed the nostalgia.

This book delivered all the cliches, wishing you're cool (kind of) aunt was your mom, the summer vacation feel every kid relishes in, unattainable first crushes, and all that comes with growing up. I expect messy, young characters who make mistakes and say the wrong thing. I really like a good coming of age story, they're my guilty pleasure genre. Jenny Han, stole my heart last year when I discovered, To All The Boys, when I finally picked up this trilogy I was nothing but excited.
